Nusail Surveys - Seawater Quality Vertical Profiles at Al Khobar

Overview

NUSAIL ENGINEERING CONSULTANCY, UK (NEC) was commissioned to execute water quality vertical profiles for Ayesa at Al Khobar. This significant endeavor aimed to provide the client with crucial data on the water quality in the region. The overarching goal was to obtain a comprehensive understanding of the seawater characteristics, which would aid in future development and maintenance initiatives.

Challenges:

Obtaining Coast Guard Permission:

One of the biggest challenges faced during this project was securing the necessary permits from the Coast Guard. NEC submitted detailed documentation, including equipment specifications, staff details, the boat being used, and the proposed methodology. After an intensive three-month review period, the permit was finally granted. This process underscored the importance of ensuring every detail aligns with regulatory standards and showcased NEC's commitment to adhering to all necessary protocols.

Methodology:

NEC adopted a strategic approach, focusing on two main areas:

1. Bathymetric Survey: This involved mapping the underwater topography of the Al Khobar region. The survey prioritized specific "Bathymetric survey lines" instead of a complete area survey. The outcome was 13 detailed seawater profiles (from seabed to sea surface) capturing data on parameters like pH, electrical conductivity, temperature, turbidity, dissolved oxygen, and chlorophyll.

2. Seawater Sampling: NEC took 10 seawater samples three meters above the seabed level, complementing the vertical profiles. These samples were destined for laboratory testing in Dammam, offering insights into the water's chemical and biological composition.

The project also demanded rigorous planning for the Coastal Bathymetric Survey Work, including using Differential GPS (DGPS) for accurate georeferencing and utilizing single-beam survey methods.

Advantages of NEC's Approach:

Advantages of NEC's Approach:

  • Accurate and detailed mapping of the seabed topography.
  • Comprehensive data on water quality, enabling informed decision-making for future projects.
  • Precise georeferencing, ensuring that all data was located accurately in relation to the Earth's surface.

Benefits:

NEC's meticulous approach led to several tangible benefits:

  • Informed Decision Making: With comprehensive data, stakeholders can make informed decisions about future projects in the Al Khobar region.
  • Maintenance and Development: The detailed mapping and data can guide future development projects, ensuring that they are sustainable and in harmony with the region's marine environment.
  • Cost-Efficiency: By capturing accurate data in the initial stages, future projects can avoid costly reworks and modifications.
