Overview
NUSAIL ENGINEERING CONSULTANCY, UK (NEC) was commissioned by Environmental Horizons to conduct a Bathymetric Survey at Doga. This project was pivotal in assessing underwater topography, a vital step for future planning and development in the designated area.
Methodology:
NEC's approach involved several strategic steps:
1. Bathymetric Survey Area Definition: The specific area for the survey was demarcated to ensure focused and relevant data collection.
2. DEM Data Processing from Satellite Image: High-resolution images were imported from the Up42.com website, followed by data processing using Agisoft Metashape software. This involved photo alignment, dense quality building, DEM construction, and the eventual export of the DEM.
3. Hydrographic Survey: The team mobilized to Doga, KSA, for an on-site hydrographic survey. The equipment was thoroughly tested before deployment. The tools utilized included:
- Depth Echosounder – M3 Sonar
- Positioning tools – Hemisphere 113
- Data acquisition & processing software: Hypack & Hysweep Software
- Tide recorder – RTK Tide
4. Vessel Utilization: : A survey vessel measuring 8.45m was employed for the project. A safety audit ensured the vessel's preparedness for the operation, confirming the presence and functionality of necessary safety equipment.
Challenges:
Ensuring the accuracy and precision of data was paramount. The team had to meticulously process satellite images, align photos, and construct the DEM. Moreover, on-site hydrographic surveys required careful calibration and operation of equipment to capture reliable data.
Benefits:
The Bathymetric Survey provided Environmental Horizons with:
- Detailed Underwater Topography: The survey offered insights into the seabed's structure and features.
- Data for Future Planning: The collected data can guide future infrastructure and development projects, ensuring they are sustainable and in line with the region's marine environment.
- Safety and Precision: NEC's rigorous safety audits and methodological approach ensured that data was collected safely and accurately.
