Pre Bathymetric Survey in Quriyat Harbour
Overview
Nusail Engineering Consultancy was contracted by Marine Technology to provide bathymetric survey services for Quriyat Harbour, Sultanate of Oman.
Scope of the Survey
A pre-bathymetric survey was undertaken to determine the seabed profile along the fishing harbour in Quriyat and to analyze the dredging quantity.
Equipment Used
- Odom Hydrotrac Echo Sounder
- Transducer
- Valeport Tide Gauge
- Sokkia RTK GPS
- Sokkia Total Station
- Bar Plate
Survey Procedure
An Odom Hydrotrack Echo Sounder was utilized, and 200 kHz digital outputs were logged by the navigation computer. Bar checks were conducted at the beginning of each day. The computer received corrected GPS-derived latitude and longitude. The navigation software converted the antenna position into local UTM projection coordinates. A Valeport Tide Gauge was installed at the Quriyat breakwater of the survey area to measure tidal variation. These tidal data were used to reduce the bathymetric data to Lowest Astronomical Tide (LAT). The survey datum used was WGS 84 with elevations in Mean Sea Level. The survey was conducted on July 11, 2012.
Result
The bathymetry chart was prepared. The survey area was covered with irregular seabed features, and the seabed remained relatively shallow. The dredging quantity was calculated as per the proposed depth.
