Bathymetric Survey in Seeb Harbour

Overview

Nusail Engineering Consultancy, Sultanate of Oman, was awarded the contract for a bathymetric survey for Seeb Harbour, Muscat, Sultanate of Oman, by the Ministry of Agriculture & Fisheries. The bathymetric survey was conducted in the offshore area along the coastline of the project area.

Scope of the Survey

The survey covered the area around Seeb Harbour with a line spacing of a minimum of 10 meters. Maps with contour lines at 0.5 meter intervals were prepared at a scale of 1:1000 for future design and bidding engineering works. Drawings showing the survey results in .dwg format were provided. The ASCII code (x, y, z coordinates) of the bathymetric survey data was also supplied.

Equipment Used

  • Odom Hydrotrac Echo Sounder
  • Transducer
  • Valeport Tide Gauge
  • Sokkia RTK GPS
  • Sokkia Total Station
  • Bar Plate

Survey Procedure

A pre-survey investigation was carried out at the proposed survey site to ensure a safe working area and to confirm that the client’s survey objectives could be met within the predefined survey areas. During the survey, a Valeport Tide Gauge was installed at the key wall in Seeb Harbour, tied to a client-supplied benchmark (NSA). Bathymetric data were acquired in the Seeb Harbour area at 10 meter intervals along each line. All data from each of the peripherals were logged into software with time logged in UTC. The survey datum used was WGS 84 with elevations in Mean Sea Level. The bathymetric survey started on January 2, 2012, and was completed on January 9, 2012.

Result

An Odom Hydrotrac single frequency (200 kHz) single beam echo sounder was utilized to acquire bathymetric data. The data were processed using HydroPro Software.
